Yamaha unveiled the 2025 YZF-R9 three-cylinder super sport

It seems that such a Supersport bike would sit neatly between the high-powered 600cc YZF-R6 and the powerful YZF-R1 literbike. What do you get for $12,499.

Horsepower is comparable to a high-performance 600cc Supersport bike. Increased torque. And it comes from an engine that is well-known and extensively developed (and one, I assume, is capable of producing substantially more than it does in the showroom specification). Better electronics-the 600cc machines that remain on the market either lack electronic rider aids or have less sophisticated systems than the R9. More legroom than a full-on Supersport bike, at a price comparable to a similarly outfitted 600.

It has a lower peak horsepower than a genuine literbike, but costs a third less. Horsepower is always desirable, but I’ve ridden Yamaha Triples on numerous press introductions and sporting street rides, and I’ve wanted a fairing and clip-ons far more than I’ve wanted more horsepower.

Years back, I attended an introduction for a specific variation of the R1.

A Yamaha spokesperson stated that 92% of the R1s sold never made it to a racecourse. While the R9 is track-capable, it is primarily intended to provide real-world, approachable performance. So consider the YZF-R9 to be a Supersport bike for the street, with all the appearance of a racebike platform, all the power most riders would ever need, and a chassis built to maximise twisty road delight and track days.

The bikes will be available in showrooms starting in March.

The following is the news release from Yamaha:

Accessible Supersport Performance

Yamaha Introduces the Exciting All-New YZF-R9.

MARIETTA, Ga., October 9, 2024. Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, is pleased to unveil the all-new 2025 Yamaha YZF-R9, the latest addition to its famous R-series portfolio. A new breed.

The R9 is a performance street bike designed to deliver true Supersport-level performance in an accessible package that improves the capabilities and confidence of riders across a range of skill levels.

Based on Yamaha’s well-known CP3 engine, the new 2025 YZF-R9 sports a dedicated Supersport chassis and a sophisticated electronics suite, all wrapped in attractive next-generation R-series appearance. Along with the exciting all-new R9, Yamaha has announced the rest of its R-series range for 2025, including significant changes to the 2025 YZF-R3 and an unmodified 2025 YZF-R7.

R World is Calling.

Yamaha has a long history of producing the most sought-after Supersport motorcycles, which are engineered to give the highest level of performance both on and off the track. From the rider-friendly Yamaha YZF-R3 to the unique The Yamaha R-series model family, including the track-focused YZF-R1M, allows riders of all skill levels to feel the unbridled pleasure of R World.

The answer, as always, lay in the marketplace. The performance level of 600cc Supersport motorcycles had gotten closer to that of the nearly extinct 750cc sportbikes, and the lap time difference between a 600 and a sportbike version of the FZ-09 may have been little. And Yamaha was still selling a lot of YZF-R1 litre bikes. Yamaha could have manufactured such a bike, a 900-class Supersport, but selling it in a way that did not compete with the YZF-R6 and YZF-R1 was a different matter.

Now, things have changed.

Yamaha does not include the R6 in their 2025 lineup lineup in the United States. The R1 starts at just less than $19,000. Sales of sportbikes have dropped significantly. According to industry experts, the most sophisticated 600s have become so technologically advanced and track-focused that they have priced themselves out of the market. And today’s literbikes produce 200 horsepower and are equipped with technology, making them less accessible in terms of performance and price for many riders.

Yamaha replied with the YZF-R7, a twin-cylinder sportbike designed to capitalise on a resurgence in demand for middleweights that performed well on the street. “We’ve sold a tonne of them (R7s),” remarked Gerrad Capley, Yamaha’s street motorcycle communications specialist, at the YZF-R9 launch. “The formula works for us.”

In the present market, the YZF-R9 This makes great sense. Yamaha’s CP3 engine remains strong; this year’s version produces 117 horsepower and is torquey and controllable. The company’s triple-cylinder platform features a twin-spar aluminium frame, updated inverted forks and shocks, and a full IMU-driven electronic rider aid system. Yamaha’s three-cylinder naked sportbikes are extremely capable and popular. It was only a short step from there to a full-fledged Supersport motorcycle, which Yamaha has now completed.

2025 YZF-R9 The new 2025 YZF-R9 was designed to redefine the Supersport class by combining track-capable performance with street bike accessibility via a broad, smooth power delivery, light handling, street-friendly ergonomics, and a full suite of advanced rider aidsโ€”a machine that is equally at home on a race circuit in the hands of a seasoned track rider as it is exploring canyon roads or urban streets in the hands of a dedicated street rider.

Powerful CP3 Engine The new R9’s heart and soul is its 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder engine, which has a unique ECU tune and optimised gear ratio to give exhilarating Supersport power with a more broad, torquey engine character. A well adjusted airbox intensifies induction sound, along with the CP3’s The characteristic crossplane triple exhaust tone creates an audible resonance that heightens the excitement of acceleration.

Dedicated SuperSport Chassis The new R9 chassis has a revolutionary gravity-cast Deltabox frame, the lightest aluminium frame ever offered on a Yamaha Supersport vehicle. The frame has been thoroughly tweaked to provide a fluid, predictable feel at lower speeds while also retaining Supersport stiffness for razor-sharp handling at track speeds. With a new high-spec fully adjustable KYBยฎ suspension and virtually perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the R9 provides light, agile handling that inspires confidence in a wide variety of riders and skill levels.

Premium Bremboยฎ Stylema monoblock front brake callipers work with a Bremboยฎ radial master cylinder, massive 320mm dual front discs, stainless steel brake lines, and Aggressive pad compositions provide Supersport-level braking performance with excellent power and feel. The R9 also has the option to switch off rear ABS for track riding.

Advanced aerodynamics The new YZF-R9 has MotoGPยฎ-inspired functional winglets that add downforce for a steady, grounded front-end feel while reducing drag to a minimum. In fact, the ultra-sleek new R-series design creates the most aerodynamic Yamaha motorcycle yet.

Supersport Ergonomics for Street A specific Supersport riding position is designed to provide exceptional handling and a strong sense of unity with the bike while also providing a short reach to the clip-ons, plenty of leg room, and a low seat height for added comfort in a range of riding circumstances.

New Generation TFT Display The YZF-R9 gets Yamaha’s The latest generation full-color five-inch TFT display shows a wide range of vehicle data. The rider can choose between four different street themes or a track-specific theme. Yamaha’s latest integrated handlebar switches allow you to control display themes, vehicle statistics, connectivity features, and the R9’s electrical package. The design and feel of the buttons have been carefully optimised to give intuitive operation in a small, user-friendly solution.

Smartphone Connectivity Riders can connect their smartphone to the new TFT display using Yamaha’s free Y-Connect software to receive message notifications, calls, and listen to music (with an aftermarket Bluetoothยฎ headset, not included). The Garminยฎ StreetCross app now provides full turn-by-turn navigation, making each route easier.

Advanced Electronic Suite An sophisticated six-axis inertial measurement system The IMU is based on the proven performance of Yamaha’s flagship YZF-R1 superbike. Data from the IMU and wheel speed sensors power a high-tech array of rider aids, including a nine-mode Traction Control System (TCS), three-mode Slide Control System (SCS), three-mode Lift Control System (LIF), and a Brake Control System (BC). Intervention levels can be changed to suit individual preferences, and each of these systems can be turned off to provide maximum versatility and control in a wide range of weather and surface conditions.

Yamaha R Series Style With sharp, unmistakable R-series style, featuring its characteristic M-shaped front duct and tail wing, combined with new generation design cues like angled LED position lighting and enhanced aerodynamics, including functional front winglets, the groundbreaking new YZF-R9 is immediately recognisable as the next evolution of Yamahaโ€™s iconic R-series.
