Surgical outcome analysis and research is a research laboratory under the Department of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center that specializes in outcomes research. Surgical outcome analysis and research studies surgical disorders and postoperative outcomes. The group specializes in pancreatic cancer, other gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies, vascular disorders, and transplant surgery. Surgical outcome analysis and research mission is to investigate the quality, delivery, and funding of care in order to have an immediate influence on patient care and system reforms. The group members use national health services and administrative datasets, as well as institutional databases, to explore and address factors influencing illness outcomes and healthcare disparities.
Surgical outcome analysis and researchΒ uses advanced statistical techniques such as logistic regression, prediction score, and decision analytic modeling.
About the outcomes Research outcomes Research examines the impact of health care on patient and population health outcomes. This study may also involve an assessment of economic implications related to health outcomes, such as cost effectiveness and cost utility. The emphasis is on disease-specific evaluations of care provided in broad, real-world settings. There are numerous outcomes to investigate, including mortality, morbidity, functional status, mental well-being, and other aspects of health-related quality of life. Outcomes research is a multidisciplinary field of study that investigates the usage, quality, delivery, and financing of health care services in order to improve knowledge and understanding of its structure, processes, and consequences on individuals and populations. Outcomes research gives data to help solve significant problems that are encountered.
in routine clinical practice. The knowledge gained can have an immediate effect on patient treatment and system improvement.
Surgical outcome analysis and researchΒ was established in 2007 at UMass Medical School and moved to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2012.
Surgical outcome analysis and research purpose is to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality, address healthcare inequities, and improve overall patient survival and quality of life. Surgical outcome analysis and research members expect that by participating in the surgical outcomes research community, they would be able to enhance overall patient outcomes.
Research Objectives
Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatic Disease
Other gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers
Vascular disease
Transplant Surgery and Transplant Psychology
Investigating factors that affect surgery outcomes for varied specialties such as colorectal, cardiovascular, transplant, plastic and reconstructive,
Minimally invasive surgery
About Boston Medical Center.
Boston Medical Center (BMC) in Boston, Massachusetts, is a teaching hospital for Boston University School of Medicine. BMC, located in Boston’s South End area, is New England’s largest safety net hospital, serving a diverse patient population from all over the world.
Ongoing Research
SOAR researchers use national health services and administrative databases, as well as prospective institutional tissue-linked databases, to investigate factors that influence disease outcomes in pancreatic cancer, hepatobiliary disease, vascular disease, colorectal disease, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and transplant medicine. These projects are being developed using the following databases:
AHRQ National Inpatient Sample (NIS)
National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results)
SEER Medicare – National Cancer Institute
Database
Individual research groups also have access to and knowledge in databases that are unique to diseases and specialties. This includes:
The Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) operates a regional vascular surgery database.
Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) is a national vascular surgery database.
American Society of Thoracic Surgery (ASTS) database.
National Trauma Database (NTDB)
Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients
Additionally, Surgical outcome analysis and research researchers are conducting patient-centered outcomes research aiming to:
Measure health-related, functional, and other outcomes through the eyes of patients and their families.
Create tools and techniques that help patients make complex healthcare decisions.
Assess the effectiveness of surgical interventions on patient-reported outcomes.
