This week in AI, Microsoft and OpenAI were sued for copyright infringement in connection with the use of generative AI technology by eight well-known American newspapers controlled by the massive investment firm Alden Global Capital, including the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel. Similar to The New York Times, who is suing OpenAI, they allege that Microsoft and OpenAI are stealing their intellectual property without authorization or or payment for developing and releasing generative models like GPT-4.

Frank Pine, the executive editor in charge of Alden’s newspapers, released a statement saying, “We’ve spent billions of dollars gathering information and reporting news at our publications, and we can’t allow OpenAI and Microsoft to expand the big tech playbook of stealing our work to build their own businesses at our expense.”

Considering OpenAI’s current publishing relationships and reluctance to base its whole economic strategy on the fair use defense, it appears likely that the lawsuit will result in a settlement and licensing agreement. But what about the other content producers, whose creations are being used without their consent for model training?

It sounds like Argonne National Lab had quite the celebration this winter when they invited one hundred specialists from the AI and energy sectors to discuss how the nation’s infrastructure and R&D in those fields could benefit from the quickly developing technology. The final report is largely useful but also a lot of pie in the sky, as one could expect from that group.
